Who’d a thunk???

I usually don’t see a robin in the yard until sometime around the Ides of March….until now that is….this guy has been coming in all morning to the bird bath and getting several big drinks.  He was around about a week ago also.  Wonder what he is eating?  Let alone, where he is living.  Maybe in someones barn.  Whadouthink?

For the birds

We feed quite an array of birds in our backyard. We have been so lucky attracting a wide variety of birds. A couple of weeks ago we were visited by this gorgeous Red-bellied Woodpecker. I know, I know, the head is red not the belly but trust me….the bird book says…Red-bellied.

 A rare sight indeed.

Is it over?

It appears the holidays are over.  I really enjoyed them this year.  I spent over a week up north.  Even though Dad was in the hospital a couple of days it was a wonderful Christmas.  My sister went over the top again this year..Thank God!!!  :)   The holidays were spent mostly at her house and her decorations were beautiful.  She always has the “perfect tree”.  She’s amazing.  We spent a lot of time in the kitchen with her daughter my niece.  Creating memories that will last forever.  Mom and Dad had a great time this year too.  They are so in love.

This past weekend our grandson was here with his parents my S.O. son and DIL.  What is it about 5 year olds?  So innocent and yet so knowing.  We had so much fun!  DIL is very crafty and it has seriously rubbed off on her son.

I guess I’m glad it’s over.  It was so much better than I had anticipated.  I’m looking forward to a new year.  Hope you are too!!

Ooops

I forgot to mention that the trees in the afore posted photo are birches planted by ME from little baby rootstalks to replace all the trees knocked down along the property line during the LAST ice storm.  Luckily, they fared a lot better this time.

Ice Storm 2008

I had just moved into my house in late 1997 when the Great Ice Storm of 1998 landed.  Ice was everywhere and power lines were destroyed.  After a couple of days my dad called and said “I’d better come down there, hadn’t I”  (to take care of me, and bring candles, lantern oil and batteries)  He was in northern Maine and I live in central Maine.  There was no Hope for power in the near future.  So,  down he came.  When he arrived he couldn’t believe what he had seen on the way.  Total Destruction.  Trees and power lines down everywhere…and of course, the beauty of the ice glittering everywhere you looked.  We managed with a wood stove and a gas stove.  In fact, we had a great time.  Bonding….in the midst of misery.  He was here a week and power came back.  We celebrated by going to town!!!  He left and life resumed back to (normal).  Ok now!  11 years later….(ever notice all the different 11 year cycles)…and history has repeated itself again.  The ice hit here last Thursday night.  Power went out early Friday morning, but did we get prepared?????  Oh no.  We just figured it can’t happen again!!!  It was all sort of romantic with all the candles lit and WBLM on the radio playing music from the 70′s.  Watching the sun go down hoping beyond hope that this will be the only night!.  And it WAS!!!  We got lucky and got our power back late Saturday.  But not before spending all morning trying to get the generator to work.  (Surprise!  I have a generator!  And you didn’t think I was smart enough after the first time, did you?)  So, we did stay warm even though it was 51 in the house in the morning, we got it up to 66 with the generator.  So bring it on Old Man Winter.  We live in Maine.  When the going gets tough, the tough get going!!!!!
